Our country faces major challenges

Families are struggling from the effects of the recession, and are worried about its impact on wages and jobs. Our communities feel under pressure. And our young people are finding the ladders up which they hoped to climb to a better future being kicked away.

We need a fresh approach. Our challenge is to ensure we have the right policies to build a better, fairer country. Whatever matters to you, we want to hear your views.

Because we know that politicians don’t have all the answers – we have to work together as a country if we are going to find solutions to the problems we face.

I simply believe that, as a nation, we have to re-visit and re-evaluate what our values are, and then decide what practical policies are needed. For that we should embrace the creation of a think-tank from all the major philosophies and faiths in this country, who should put forward their recommendations. There's far more commonality of belief amongst those philosophies and faiths than meets the eye. We need to see where we are going. At the moment we seem to be dodging around the trees in the forest, unable to see its canopy.

We should focus on not doing harm to the poorest nations around the world. Given events in the Middle East and and anger at tax avoidance, now is the time to propose bold action on tax havens and on arms control.

We need to do more for first time buyers. Shared ownership does not solve this problem. Special estates in all towns and cities built especially for first time buyers with controlled prices.

Look at maglev rail technology and consider its potential to link the UK's most populated urban areas with London in a quick enough time to commute daily so that labour mobility is maximised

Get the government to scrap the Smart meter rollout. Energy companies will save money and consumers will pay for the rollout through higher bills. Frankly, if you want the economy to be kick-started, the public have better ways of spending money.

A reduced VAT rate in pubs and restaurants if food is purchased. Increase in VAT to supermarkets to help the pub industry which employs a great many people.
